Roof & Deck Cleaning
Roof Cleaning & Deck Cleaning for Connecticut Shoreline Homes
Those black streaks on your roof aren’t dirt. They’re Gloeocapsa magma, a type of algae that feeds on the limestone filler in your shingles. Moss and lichen do different damage: they lift shingles and let moisture underneath. Left alone, all three will shorten the life of your roof significantly.
The growth on your deck isn’t just cosmetic either. It’s breaking down the wood surface every season it’s left there, and it makes your deck slippery underfoot. I’ve cleaned hundreds of roofs and decks on Shoreline properties using soft-wash techniques and biodegradable solutions. Here’s what that looks like.
Soft-Wash Only. Safe for All Shingle Types
I use low-pressure application with a biodegradable cleaning solution that kills algae, moss, and lichen at the root. High-pressure washing knocks granules off shingles, damages flashing, and can void manufacturer warranties. I don’t use it on roofing. Soft wash does the job without the risk.
What Roof Cleaning Removes
- Black algae streaks (Gloeocapsa magma)
- Moss growth
- Lichen: the most damaging and hardest to remove
- General discoloration from organic growth
Benefits
- Extends shingle life and protects your roof investment
- Improves curb appeal and home value
- Restores roof reflectivity, which can reduce cooling costs
- Safe for all standard asphalt shingle roofs
Restore Your Outdoor Space
I clean wood and composite decking, patios, sundecks, and outdoor entertaining areas. After cleaning, I can apply a penetrating stain or sealer to protect the wood from UV and moisture damage, which makes a real difference in how long the surface holds up between major repairs.
Surfaces We Clean
- Wood decks: pressure-treated, cedar, redwood
- Composite decking: Trex, TimberTech, and similar
- Patios: concrete, brick, and stone pavers
- Sundecks and pergola structures
- Driveways and walkways
Common Questions
How often should I have my roof cleaned?
Every two to three years is typical for most Connecticut Shoreline homes, or when you start to see visible streaking or growth. Homes under heavy tree cover or on north-facing slopes may need it more frequently.
Will roof cleaning damage my shingles?
Not with soft wash. High-pressure washing can and does cause damage. That’s why I don’t use it on roofing. Low pressure with the right cleaning solution is safe for all standard asphalt shingle roofs.
What’s the best time of year to clean a deck?
Late spring or early summer. After winter, before your outdoor season. Fall is also good, especially if you’re planning to stain or seal. I won’t apply cleaning products or sealants below 50°F.
Do you stain and seal decks after cleaning?
Yes. After cleaning I can apply a penetrating stain or sealer. I’ll walk you through the options and what I’d recommend for your specific deck material and condition.
How long does roof cleaning take?
Most residential roofs take two to four hours. The solution continues working after application. You’ll often notice continued improvement in the days that follow.
