Interior Painting in Haddam, CT

Haddam is next door for me. I’ve been based in Killingworth for decades, and a good share of my repeat customers are on your side of the town line. I’ve been painting interiors here since 1988: antique colonials with two centuries of paint on the trim, and newer houses tucked back in the woods. Different houses, same rule. Do the prep right, use good paint, and leave the house cleaner than we found it.

Old Paint, Old Plaster, Honest Prep

Interior painting detail by John Wills Painting

Haddam is the only town in Connecticut with the river running right through the middle of it, and the houses show that history. Drive Route 154 through the old town center and you pass Federal-period homes that have stood there for two hundred years. Up in Higganum and out on Haddam Neck it’s a mix: old farmhouses, capes, and newer builds set back on wooded lots. I’ve worked in all of them.

Old houses ask more of a painter. In an antique Haddam colonial you’re dealing with plaster walls that move with the seasons, trim carrying a dozen layers of paint, and wavy surfaces you don’t want to sand dead flat, because that’s the character. The honest answer is prep: scrape what’s failing, patch the plaster properly, spot-prime with the right product, and know when to leave well enough alone. That’s the difference between paint that lasts and paint that peels in two winters.

Haddam and Killingworth share more than a town line. Our kids go to school together, and I’m proud to help sponsor the Haddam-Killingworth Youth Football League that plays here. Most of my work in Haddam comes the same way it does everywhere: somebody’s neighbor or sister had us in, and they passed my number along. Thirty-eight years in, that’s still the only advertising I trust. If you want to check up on us, ask around town.

Common Projects

What Haddam Homeowners Call Us For

Antique Home Interiors

Plaster repair, layered old trim, colors that suit a house with history. We take these slow. The prep matters more than the paint, and rushing an antique interior always shows.

Stairways and Hallways

The hardest-working walls in the house, and the tallest ladder work. We handle scuffed rails, dinged corners, and two-story stairwells with the right equipment and no drips on the treads.

Whole-Home Repaints

One crew, one schedule, every room. We work in a sensible order so you’re never pushed out of the whole house at once, and we finish each room before moving on.

Ceiling Work

Water stains, cracked plaster ceilings, smoke haze, or just a tired flat white. Ceilings show every shortcut, so we prime stains properly instead of painting over the problem.

FAQ

Haddam Questions, Answered

Can you paint an antique home’s interior without losing its character?

Yes, and that’s most of the skill. We repair plaster instead of ripping it out, keep the gentle waves in old walls, and don’t sand hand-planed trim into something that looks new. The goal is a clean, fresh finish that still reads like a two-hundred-year-old house.

My trim has decades of old paint on it. Do you strip it all off?

Usually not. Full stripping is rarely necessary. We scrape and sand what’s loose or alligatored, feather the edges so old layers don’t telegraph through, and use a bonding primer. In houses older than 1978 we work carefully and keep dust contained. Where paint has truly failed, we’ll tell you straight.

We’re close to the river. Does humidity affect interior paint?

It can, mostly in bathrooms, basements, and older houses that breathe more than new ones do. We plan around it: let patching compounds and primer cure fully, choose products suited to damp-prone rooms, and flag any moisture problem that paint alone won’t fix. Paint over a moisture issue and it comes right back.

Why won’t you quote a price over the phone?

Because I’d be guessing, and guesses help nobody. Two Haddam colonials the same size can be completely different jobs: one has sound walls, the other has plaster repair, heavy old trim, and a tall stairwell. I come out, look at the actual rooms, and give you a free written estimate based on what your house needs.

Besides Haddam, I also paint interiors in Higganum, Chester, and Killingworth. See the full service area, or everything we do on the interior painting page.
