Interior Painting in Madison, CT

Madison is right over the town line from my shop in Killingworth, and I’ve been painting interiors here since 1988. A lot of these houses have the kind of trim and built-ins you don’t see in newer construction, and that’s the work I like best. My crew and I handle whole-home repaints, single rooms, pre-sale freshening, all done carefully, with good paint, and cleaned up like we were never there. Estimates are always free.

Madison Houses Ask More of a Painter

Interior painting detail by John Wills Painting

Drive the Post Road from the Green past RJ Julia and you pass houses that have stood there for two hundred years. Head toward the water and it’s shingled cottages; head north and it’s big colonials on wooded lots. Madison doesn’t have one kind of house, which means there’s no one way to paint here. Every job starts with looking hard at what the house actually needs.

The older houses here carry a lot of wood: window casings, wainscot, crown, built-ins around the fireplace. That trim is where a paint job shows its quality, so we take our time on prep: cleaning, sanding, priming what needs primer, caulking the gaps. On homes near the water, damp air is hard on walls and sills, so I pay attention to what’s underneath before anything gets a coat. Shortcuts show up later. We don’t take them.

I live and work one town over in Killingworth, so for me Madison is next door, not a drive. Most of my work here comes from referrals: one neighbor sees a job, tells another. That’s how it’s been since 1988. I sponsor the youth baseball and football leagues back home, and some of those kids play against Madison teams. When your business runs on word of mouth this close to home, every job has to hold up. Mine do.

What Madison Homeowners Call Us For

Pre-Sale Repaints

If you’re listing a house in this market, clean walls and fresh trim earn their keep. I’ll walk it with you, flag the rooms buyers will judge, and get it done before the photographer shows up.

Designer Colors

Plenty of Madison jobs come with a designer’s palette attached. Good. I’ll work straight from the spec: exact colors, sheens, and lines where they’re supposed to be.

Whole-Home Repaints

Every room done by the same crew, to the same standard. We work in a sensible order so you’re never living in a construction site, and the last room looks as sharp as the first.

Trim and Built-Ins

Casings, crown, wainscot, bookcases. Older trim needs real prep before enamel goes on: cleaning, sanding, the right primer. That’s slow work, and it’s the part I enjoy most.

FAQ

Madison Questions, Answered

We’re selling our Madison house. Should we repaint before listing?

Usually, yes, but not everything. I’ll walk through with you or your agent and point out what’s worth painting and what buyers won’t notice. Usually it’s the kitchen, main living areas, and any room with a bold color. Soft neutrals photograph well and let the house speak. Then you decide.

Our designer picked the colors. Can you work from their spec?

Yes, and I like those jobs. Give me the schedule: colors, sheens, which walls get what. We’ll follow it exactly, in Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams. If something in the spec worries me, like a sheen that won’t hold up in a bathroom, I’ll say so before we start.

Our house is old and the trim has a lot of paint history. Can you deal with that?

That’s most of Madison, honestly. Old trim gets cleaned, sanded smooth, and primed properly before finish coats. That’s what keeps enamel from peeling in a year. On houses old enough to have earlier generations of paint, we prep carefully and keep the work area contained and clean.

What goes into the price of an interior repaint?

Wall condition, how much trim there is, ceiling height, whether we’re changing colors dramatically, and the paint you choose. Madison houses tend to have plenty of trim. Prep is the biggest piece by far. I come out, look at everything, and give you a written estimate for free.

Besides Madison, I also paint interiors in Clinton, Killingworth, and Westbrook. See the full service area, or everything we do on the interior painting page.
